Boston, MA- The Eastern Junior Hockey League closed out January with a bang and the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs and South Shore Kings will likely battle to the finish for the regular season title while the race for the remaining spots tightens. The South Shore Kings kept their lead intact with a 7-4 win over Bridgewater on Saturday and a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Bay State Breakers on Sunday. The Monarchs picked up five points over the weekend with games against the Valley Jr. Warriors and Capital District Selects. The Monarchs won 6-4 on Thursday against Valley and then traveled to Albany over the weekend. After a 13-2 win on Saturday, the Monarchs looked to complete the sweep on Sunday, taking a 5-3 lead into the third period. Capital District, however, had other ideas, as Bryan Colella and Nick Zaino scored in the last ten minutes to force a deadlock. Neither team scored in overtime, and the game ended with a 5-5 score. The Jersey Hitmen took three points from the Philadelphia Revolution, winning the opening match 6-2 and tying 4-4 in the second game. Valley added a cushion between themselves and the Green Mountain Glades by beating Bay State 4-3 on Saturday. In their other action Bridgewater downed the Huskies 6-1 on Friday. The Junior Bruins kept hold of their number two spot in the North with a sweep of the Glades, winning 5-3 on Saturday and holding on for a 3-2 win on Sunday. Syracuse continues to lurk right behind the Bruins thanks to a sweep of the Huskies. The Stars took Saturday's contest 8-2 and followed that up with a 10-0 win on Sunday. The Springfield Pics had a huge weekend, downing the Bridgewater Bandits 5-1 on Wednesday and then sweeping Apple Core, winning 5-1 on Friday and 7-2 on Sunday. WEEKEND PREVIEW: The Junior Bruins kick off the action Wednesday night when they visit the Valley Jr. Warriors in Haverhill. The Bruins then face the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs on Friday in Hooksett before returning home on Saturday to rematch with Valley. The Monarchs begin their homestand with a Thursday home tilt against the Green Mountain Glades and finish on Saturday night against the Springfield Pics. The Glades host the Huskies for a pair in Vermont over the weekend. Apple Core visit the league-leading South Shore Kings for a pair and then host the Jersey Hitmen on Wednesday night. Prior to the Apple Core game, the Hitmen host the Bay State Breakers for two games. Philadelphia visits Syracuse for a Saturday afternoon matchup, and the Bridgewater Bandits travel to Albany for a series with the Capital District Selects. COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Zach Marginsky of the Syracuse Stars will be a Bentley Falcon in the fall. Brian Phillips of the Bay State Breakers will play for Tufts University in the fall, and teammate Erik Hansen has committed to Amherst College for next season. A trio of Apple Core players committed as well: Mike Garlasco has committed to Clarkson University, Nick Therrien will head to Utica College, and Louie Balzano will play for Manhattanville College. -Mike Klein, 3 February 2010 Back to news articles |
