NewsWAGNER’S OT GOAL SHOOTS DOWN BREAKERSDate: Jan 31, 2010
Foxboro, MA- Chris Wagner scored twenty seconds into overtime to give the South Shore Kings a 3-2 victory over the Bay State Breakers on Sunday. Bay State came flying out of the gate in the first period and threw everything they had at Kings goalie Brad Barone but had nothing to show for it. The Breakers finished the opening frame with a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal, but the Kings put one in with 28 seconds remaining. In the final minute of the first period, Brian Schultz sent Chris Wagner skating around the net and Wagner threaded a pass to Shane Walsh, who shot the puck top shelf past Breakers goalie Nick Dries. The goal energized the Kings, who were hardly slowed down by the intermission, and another stretched the lead to two goals just 38 seconds into the second period. After the opening faceoff, the Kings charged into the zone and Brian Schultz hit Nolan Descoteaux on the point with a pass. Descoteaux shot and Walsh tipped the puck into the net. Both goaltenders turned away shot after shot in the second, but the Breakers found the back of the net late in the period during a power play. Greg Merrill picked up a loose puck at the blue line and fired a shot that bounced off the glass behind the net, but James Murphy gathered the rebound and his shot from the goal line went behind Brad Barone and just inside the far post with 4:09 on the clock. Matt Vidal tied the game just 59 seconds into the third period. Tyler Gilmore had the puck at the point and passed to Vidal, who was waiting in the low slot, and Vidal tipped it in. Both Barone and Breakers goaltender Adam Janecyk were perfect throughout the third period, turning away 16 and 24 shots respectively. As neither team could find another crack in the goalies, it was on to overtime. The Kings won the opening faceoff in the extra session and stormed into the Breakers' zone. Kyle LeBrun set up Chris Wagner with a pass, and Wagner shot the puck, only to have Janecyk get a piece of it. However, once the puck bounced off Janecyk, it slid into the net to give the Kings the win. Janecyk made 32 saves in relief of Dries, and Barone stopped 42 shots. The Kings return to action on Saturday when they begin a two-game series against Apple Core, and the Breakers play a pair in New Jersey against the Hitmen next weekend. -Mike Klein, 31 January 2010 Back to news articles |
